- (continued from previous page)Basket Making.Basket making has been carried on in Monasterevan since early times and a man named Mr. Dominic Meredith is still doing the work. He lives in Clogheen, about a mile form the town. He make potato baskets and log cliabs. He makes them of hazel and ash sallies. These trees grow in the district round about. He goes out and cuts the sallies as long as he can get them. He does not dry them and just points them at one end. He makes a frame of the sallies using about thirteen or fourteen standards for a round potato basket. Then he plaits the sallies through the standards. The other baskets are made in a similar manner. He sells them to retailers for about a shilling or one and six each. Sometimes he brings a supply in his donkey cart to the fairs held in Kildare, Portarlington, Mountmellick and Tullamore. Mr. Meredith learnt this trade form other basket makers, but his father did not carry on this work.William Bryan 9 ad Feabra 1938.
