  1. The houses in olden times were roofed with heather. There was a bed in the kitchen and it was called "a Standing bed." The fire was always on the floor, in a big pot. The chimney was made of clay and wattles.
    The old floors were made of clay. Half doors are very common in the district and they were long ago too. The only fuel they had for the fire was old sods off the mountain. They used to have dip-rushes for a light at night.
