  1. The local fairs are held in the towns of Carlow and Bagenalstown. They are always held in towns. the buyers often transact business in the country. In days gone by they used to hold a fair at crossroads but they never held a fair at farm-houses.
    In the town of Carlow there is a special place call the Fair Green where fairs are held. A toll of 3d per head is paid on cattle entering the Fair Green. The money thus collected is claimed by the County Council.
    When the cattle are sold "luck-money" is given by the seller to the buyer. this is commonly called "luck penny.
