    a large tree, and with his knife, cut a triangular piece, inclined inwards, out of the bark. This he removed carefully and placed in a safe place. He then commenced boring on a bias and downward until he had bored a hole a foot or more in depth. Then he filled it with buttermilk and stopped it with the piece of daub. He then fitted the piece of bark into its place and secured it with a nail. He did this to every one of the trees, and after some time a general decay came on all the trees. The landlord believed that it was a natural decay and allowed him to cut them all down for fear of injuring the cattle.
