- Food in olden times.
There was a vast difference between the food used long ago and the food used to-day. the ancient Irish never used sweetstuffs, but instead wholesome foods as oatmeal porridge, potatoes and goats' milk. They partook of three meals in the day - breakfast, dinner and supper. The old people never eat their breakfast immediately after arising. Instead they milked and fed their cows and did other work in the farm-yard. Then they had an appetite for a good meal which consisted of oatmeal porridge.
Long ago the people never drank tea, except around Christmas. The bread was made of Indian meal, flour and buttermilk. Oatmeal cakes were also made and were called "griddle cakes". For dinner the people ate potatoes and drank plenty of fresh buttermilk. Vegetables were seldom used except cabbage and water-cress. Meat was never used except by farmers who could afford it, they killed their own pugs and salted the bacon.
Long ago large quantities of oats were grown. when threshed the ga(?), grain was sent to the nearest mill and there is was ground into oatmeal which was very much used. For supper boxty was used which was made with raw(continues on next page)- Collector
