They did not die in it as in other parts of the country In 1845 the Blight appeared in Ireland for the first time It spread very quickly and all the crops failed from the beginning of the country to the end. The potatoes decayed in the ground Some people fed on weeds and raw turnips. The little children used to go to the fields gathering weeds. They used to boil them with salt and live on them. The following year the crop was the same The people could pay no rents and the thought they would be persuted but Douglas Hyde's father gave them a clear reciept They were very glad now.
