    which the road was made are an indication of the standard of living of the Irish peasant at the time. The men received four pence a day as road-makers and the girls and women the same amount for carrying gravel. The gravel was carried in specially constructed creels. This brings home to our minds that carts drawn by animals were not in use at the time.
