- Candle-making was practiced very much in this district long ago.
First a bundle of rushes was brought in and peeled. Then they were steeped in grease and allowed to dry, and steeped again.
The tallow candle was made by tying wicks, made from plaited strands of thread, across a frame.
The frame was dipped in a vessel containing tallow or grease and then the wicks were allowed to dry.
This process of dipping and drying the wicks was continued until the tallow was of the required thickness.(continues on next page)- Collector
