- Once upon a time there lived in Glengarriff an old woman and her only son. One night the son heard the cattle in great confusion in the yard. He arose and went down to the kitchen and went out. He tried to send the cattle away from the house but he failed several times and the cattle were in great excitement. After a time he gave up hunting and he went back to bed. He felt a terrible pain in his leg. It became so great that after a time he could hardly bear it.
The woman had six forks and the next day one was missing. She went to Glengarriff and she bought one. She also brought the Doctor to the boy but he could do nothing for him.
There lived not far from them a "fear feasa" and the woman went to him. He told her to throw one fork into the river when she would go home and she did. That same night the boy felt better and every day he improved until he was better.
It is said that the night the boy got up he roused the fairies and one of them stuck a fork in his leg. When the woman threw away the fork they were short one and they pulled it out of his leg.- Informant
