  1. Besides using shot guns for fowling young boys went out at night in the winter time killing small birds. For this purpose they kept prepared bundles of dry splinters. When these were lighted they gave forth a strong bright light which dazzled the birds and they were easily caught or killed they. These were made from a straight smooth piece of bog-wood known locally as a "scolb". They were usually cut with a knife.
