- There is a lar open flat bordering the local river which is commonly known as "The Callow" and which is now flooded during the winter.
About 60 or70 years ago this was a famous hurling pitch as the land was then dry.
Teams came to hurl from the neighbouring district, and to compete with the locals every Sunday. - Monksland was the local Racecourse in days gone by. The horses used to race between the hills. while the spectators stood on the hills.
Horses belonging to the Fallons of Dysart, and Naughtons of Thomastown raced there.
