Allow me to make a suggestion to get out of this difficulty and so alleviate the sufferings fo the people. This is to put a small salary to state officials, and to place the money saved in a treasury every year and in a short space of time a whole amount of money would be accumulated. Some trustworthy person in every four townlands should report the financial circumstances of the district to those in authority and give certain sum to any one in distress.

In the Penal times there was a monastery at Macloneigh about two miles from Macroom. The monks and priests were hunted by the soldiers and one priest was killed. This incident happened on the lands now occupied by Patrick Mahony, Toames. On the spot where the priest blood was spilled, no blade of grass ever since grew and the read earth can be seen to this day. - Informant
