In the Penal times there was a monastery at Macloneigh about two miles from Macroom. The monks and priests were hunted by the soldiers and one priest was killed. This incident happened on the lands now occupied by Patrick Mahony, Toames. On the spot where the priest blood was spilled, no blade of grass ever since grew and the read earth can be seen to this day.
