- There was one hedge - school situated at Kilcar Gate near Curraghboy on the Sallowgrove road.
The teacher's name was Costelloe. He taught the usual Hedge school subjects - Reading - Writing and Arithmetic. As far as can be made out Irish was not taught.
He lived amongst the farmers. It must be remembered that the school in which the writer is teaching was built in 1835.A. D. and is one of the oldest if not the oldest natl. schools in Connaught. The necessity of hedge schools did not exist here at a time when they were common in other places.
