“Jackie the Lantern was a shoemaker and a stiff surly old boy he was.”
(continued from previous page)The devil says he.
Take your ease over there a while says Jack & set on the chair. He "sat" on the chair & if he did he [?] there. Jack had an iron flail & he nearly beat the life out of him with it, but he let him go in the finish.
Another demon came in later, but Jackie saw him coming & he shut the door on him.
You'll have to come to my master the devil, says he.
I'm old and feeble says Jack but I suppose I'll have to go. But like a good boy break a good strong laurel stick there for me to help me to go along with you.
He went to break the stick & if he did he stuck[?] to the tree. Jack nearly finished him with the iron flail.
When Jack died he would not be left into heaven, & he was sent to hell, when the ones in hell saw him coming they ran & bolted the door & wouldn't let him in. Thats why he's going around the world since, with a lantern putting people astray.- Informant
