- In the year 1917 the barytes mines of Dreenlomane were a nice sight. When lighted at night it looked like a city, and bells tolled at morning to call the labourers to work. One night, when work was over, a great fire broke out, and by morning the most important parts of the mine were burned. The under-ground passages were destroyed, and were unable to be repaired except at a great expense. Efforts were made to quench the fire, but it took its own course. The burning was the first decline of the mines, and although they were worked since, it was unsuccessful.
