When the deadly fight was o'er,
Some thousands lay on the battle field
Their lives to claim no more,
The moon shone pale on the damp, cold, ground,
Where a dying soldier lay,
The breath of death around him crept,
As his life blood flowed away,
A passing comrade heard his moans
And soon the sufferer found,
As he gently raised his aching head off the damp, cold, ground,

A lock of my hair I crave you bear
