When Cromwell conquered Ireland no Catholic teacher was allowed to teach.
I heard my grandmother say that her father and mother were educated at Lamanaugh Cross, in the parish of Boherbue in the county of Cork. The head schoolmasters name was Mr. O'Leary of Derrygallon, Kanturk, County Cork. The teachers used to lodge in the houses. In the winter time they used to teach the children in the houses and in the summer time they used to teach the children by the hedges.
The children used to pay the teacher by bringing sixpence a week. it was Irish they spoke in all these schools. They were taught how to read and write. It was on slates they wrote with chalk. The teacher sat down on a stone and the children sat down around him. The teacher remained a month in each(continues on next page)- Collector
