ditches and fields for about a mile. My Grandmother, Kate Daly, walked from Charleville to Kiskeam, via Newmarket, about 23 miles, in six hours. She started at 6 o'clock in the morning and reached home at 12 o'clock. To make matters worse for her, it was the time when flannel petticoats were in fashion, and she had one on her. It was raining heavily the whole way, and the garment soaked up the rain and she was wet to the skin.
When she was 18 yrs. she used take a full sack of flour on her back, up an almost straight stairs.
