- At the present time tailors do all their work in their own houses. They still sit on the table crosslegged. About 40 years ago the tailor always worked where the suit was wanted. He sat on the table and boarded and lodged where he worked. He sang and talked while he worked and was the news carrier of the district. Johnny Duggan flourished about 50 or 60 years ago. He lived on the Old Road. The tailor always brought his own lap-board. Gabha Snáth was the thread used. The wool fair was in the month of July.
After the wool was bought it was slámed. It was carded at home, or sent to the mill at Ballymalis near Beaufort. It was purified in Dubh Poill - i.e. greasy bog-water. This was called "Scouring". There was a hole near "The City" at the foot of the Paps, which was very suitable for this purpose. The wool was put to dry there, and later spun.
In winding, pegs were driven into the wall at certain distances, and the thread was(continues on next page)- Informant
