- This is a great big rock on the southern bank of the Blackwater, about a mile east of Killavullen. It is supposed that a castle once stood on it.
The following is the reason for its name.- When the Hennessy family resided at Ballymacmoy Mansion they received information that Cromwell was to cross the river near Killavullen to attack their Mansion.
They immediately placed a garrison of soldiers on this rock to prevent the enemy from crossing the ford.- Hence its name "The Garrison Rock."
