- (continued from previous page)hands. The weather can be judged by certain birds such as the swallows, wild geese, and the curlews. If the swallows fly low it is a sign of rain. When the wild geese come south it is a sign of bad weather and when the curlew screeches twice it is a sign of rain also. There are no stories told locally connecting with any of these. It is said that the robin got his red breast at the crucifixion of Our Lord.
