- All the houses long ago were thatched except those houses owned by the gentry. There was a slate quarry in Ballydorgan and the slates from it were used for the houses belonging to the gentry. In the old houses a settle-bed was always in the corner of the house and the fire-place was always in the centre of the gable wall. The old floors were made of mortar and stone and there was a large beam keeping up the chimney. Half doors were very common and candles were made locally long ago.
