- The townland of Glensharrold is very bad land - wet cut - away bog, some of which was reclaimed with much labour. This has now deteriorated into a complete mass of rushes. The above is to give my readers an idea of how the poor tenants suffered and had to pay as high as twelve shillings and six pence per acre for this so called land.
The late landlord of the estate was Capt. "J" "OG" Delmege, Castlepark, Limerick. About fifty years ago, headed by Rev. Fr. Bob Ambrose, C.C. Ardagh, some of the tenants decided not to pay any rent until such time as the landlord would fix a fair and reasonable rent for them.
The landlord Mr. John C. Delmege would not give them any hearing only threatened them with eviction. The sheriff with R. I. C and soldiers arrived and evicted all who rebelled against paying those enormously high rents. They adopted the Plan of campaign but did not stay out long enough. They returned to their homes with much the same high rent as they paid previous to eviction. On one occasion he called his tenants together and said to them. "The coats on your backs are not your own. They are mine,"
