Long ago there was a hedge-school in Mcann's passage which is situated to the east of Knockaderry village. Scholars came there from all parts of the parish and they were taught by a man named Croke who was very learned. While the teaching was going on the scholars kept watch in turn - that is they watched for the coming of the soldiers and if it happened that they came the scholars had to disperse quickly.
