- On St. Stephen's day it is in the custom in our local place to go hunting the wren. Young little boys and travelling folk also go around. They are received in this district very well. The children get a few pence and sometimes a slice of barm brack. The big boys get refreshments and money. Bands of boys in motor - cars come from Adare, Croom, Rathkeale, and Newcastle. On St. Stephen's night the most of the wren boys drink in the town. Some sensible boys get up a dance for the money they collect. They get about 4/6 or 5/- a couple from those who attend. They make more profit by doing this.(continues on next page)
