Once upon a time there was a very heavy anvil in the forge in Bolane and a lot of people used be trying to lift it. One night John Purcell of the townland of Knockroe came in to the forge and there was a crowd of people there, each of them in their turn trying to lift it.When he saw them he went out again and brought in a lot of heavy stones. He put them on top of the anvil and threw it out a window in the forge with the stones.Every smith can banish rats with a red iron and horse hoof. If the smith puts a red iron to the hoof of a horse a terrible smell will come from it.
