- Buckley the smith arís.
One morning after a fair in Kilmallock at which Jim happened to be, the smith was feeling the effects of the day before so much that he decided to take a trip to the nearest pub to get a 'hair of the dog that bit him'.
He hadn't gone very far from his house when he saw approaching, driving a cart, Dan M-, a man in whom the bump? of curiosity was highly developed.
Jim is stated to have said of the same man, "That the ould devil of curiosity was standing on his tippytoes, inside in him, looking out through his two eyes".
They saluted one another & Jim to put Dan on a false scent said in a very casual way "Did you meet a little pig on your way coming Dan?"
His intention was to give Dan the idea that he was looking for a stray bonham, but he reckoned without 'counting' his man, for Dan the inquisitive immediately spluttered out as he pulled up his nap, "Oh did you buy a pig? At the fair I suppose? Or you have(continues on next page)- Collector
