  1. Marriages most frequently take place during Shrove. A boy and girl never got married in the morning as they do nowadays but in the evening. Nobody got married in the month of May because the old people said it was an unlucky month. Before the boy and girl got married their relations would come and make the match. Long ago people got married in their own houses. After the the wedding they had a dance and whiskey and stout. The bride and bridegroom would cut the wedding cake and give each person a small piece of it. Matches were made in my district. Two nights before wedding the boy would take his friends to the girl's house. The husband and wife rode home on horseback from the. The night after the wedding straw boys visited the houses and danced a set. One of the old customs long ago was to tie an old shoe to the bridal car or to throw flowers at when they were coming out of the Church for luck. They would go to the Church with the boy and girl. There would be a race to the Church and another home. The one who would win would get a prize.
