He would never tell anyone what he saw but it is commonly held that he witnessed a hurling match among the Good People and having taken part in the game himself he was from that time taken special care of by the Good People themselves.A man named O'Brien of Mitchelstown was very fond of walking by night. One bright moonlight night he and his brother were out walking and they heard the banging of ash on ash inside the ditch. Tom was a great hurler himself and he and his brother stood on the ditch to watch the game. After a while one of the Good People called on him to take a place on the team.
