On the right bank of the river Loobagh stand the ruins of the historical old Abbey of Kilmallock.
This Abbey was built in the year 1291 by Gilbert Fitzgibbon second son of John of Callan Lord of Offaly and grand-son of Maurice Fitzgerald the first norman invader.
Gilbert Fitzgibbon did not complete the Abbey it was his son Maurice Fitzgerald that completed it. Maurice was the first to bear the title of the White Knight.
The King of England gave him the title after fighting a brave battle against the Scots at the battle of Hallidon
