    In the centre of an old fort situated in the townsland of Freigh, which is about a mile north of Newport a hoard of gold is believed to be buried. It is supposed to have been put there by the Danes in ancient times. Two attempts have been made in fairly recent times to bring the precious metal to the surface. A travelling tradesman, named Christopher Malachy, dreamt of the spot where the treasure is hidden. Others also dreamt of it and attempted to unearth it, but they were so scared by what they saw and heard during the digging operations, that they fled in terror, and left the digging instruments behind them. In fact they were so terror-stricken by their experiences that they refused to satisfy the questioning of neighbouring people about their adventure.
    However, after many years, an old blacksmith, named James Ryan of Munnia, Newport (nicknamed Carthy gabha) who was a habitual drunkard (and anxious to get "easy money" to satisfy his craving) intoxicated poor old Malachy in a public
