- (continued from previous page)Deere of Rear Cross. He used to make keelers to set the milk, firkins to hold the butter, and barrels to churn the cream. The barrels used to be made of timber. They used have them of a certain thickness and on the ends of the barrel they used fix iron which was called hand iron and they used rest on a frame when churning, so that they could make butter out of the cream by twisting the iron round and round. There used to be a big hole about five inches in the barrel to put in the cream and it used to be closed with a piece of timber called a clapper. Inside in the barrel there used to be three dash boards to help to make the butter.Sugan
People used to make their own ropes of twisted hay; the hay rope was and is still called "Sugan". They had a twister for the use. The twister was made by holding two pieces of elder, connected by a piece of plain wire. A turn was put on one end of and the hay put on the turns, as the wire was twisted, the hay twisted with it and the twisted hay was the "Sugan" or the hay rope. people put the "Sugan2 on chairs, and the "Sugan" holds longer than the hemp and is also used for tying hay and tying the thatch of the turf.Burning Lime in Kilns
