parents received a good edcuation and a great many came over here from European countries to complete their education in the Island of Saints and Scholars. The last of the hedge school masters that was in this district was a man named Mattie Flood. He used go about to the farmers houses and the people built a small hut in a vacant piece of land at Rear Cross. The young people went to learn their lesson, each one carrying a few sods of turf to heat up the school and for seating purposes.
In 1881 Rear School was built and that was the last of the Hedge School Master.
