    A hundred years ago a body appointed to examine the conditions of life in Ireland, reported that half the families in the country lived in small mud walled cabins without windows or chimneys and with the smoke coming out through a hole in the roof. Their food was potatoes with water and even without salt. We should all be glad that those unhappy days are passed away. Indeed we ought to welcome our new civilization.
