- (continued from previous page)Early next morning Mrs Walsh and her companions departed by road for Glin (a distance of some 6 or 7 miles) leaving An Cailín with her husband and "Shampy" in the public-house in Carrigafoyle. These people afterwards came forward and gave material evidence at the time of the murderers. On some pretext or other Shampy induced An Cailín to come out in the boat with him for a row on the Shannon near Carrigafoyle. This was a course only a plan to drown her. Sullivan however - scoundrel that he was - failed to do the foul deed this time and returned to the shore where he met Scanlan who roundly scolded him for not accomplishing his purpose. Shampy gave Scanlan the excuse "that when he looked at her innocent face he hadn't the heart to drown her." He was then given more drink by Scanlan and again ordered to take her out in the boat on a new pretext. Shampy committed the awful crime this time and returned to the shore without An Cailín Bán.
Some days afterwards Mrs Walsh mentioned before saw Shampy's sister wearing the ring which she saw on the finger of An Cailín Bán and which he (shampy) tried to force from her that night in the public-house at Carrigafoyle. She also saw Sullivan's sister wearing some articles of apparel such as a silk handkerchief a grey mantle and a skirt which (woman like) Mrs(continues on next page)
