    mother was very proud of him. Now at this time all the nobles and princes were searching about the country for the king's three daughters that had been brought away by giant magicians, but no trace was found. Jack said that he might as well go too, and he told his mother that he would go to the king for work. She baked many cakes as it was a long journey " Next morning he was off riding on a donkey with his dogs, and his flute in his pocket, as he was the best flute player in the country. He travelled all day, and near night he came to a little house where he heard a woman crying. He jumped off the ass and went in. An old, feeble, woman sat crying by the fire. "What ails you" says Jack. "Four blackguards who came and took a cat which was my only companion and if you bring him back I will reward you well." Jack took his stick and made off after the men. They had the cat hung by a rope off a tree and every time one of them would hit him he would say "Take this." Jack tore into them and he commenced to hit them every blow he hit them he would say "Take this." He brought the cat back to the woman. Now the woman's husband was a magician, and he was dead with many years. She gave Jack his magic horse and sword She showed him a glass and when he looked in he saw the road that he was to take.
