- Once in the early part of the fifteenth century a fort was built by the English up in the north of Clare. It was garrisoned by a regiment or battalion of English soldiers.
After a while it was attacked by some of the Thomond chieftains and a terrific battle ensued and it was soon taken by the attackers. After it was taken it was seen that there was a 'breach" or "bearna" in the wall which was caused by the attackers heavy guns.
