- The only hedge-school known to exist in this district was one at Mount Doyle on the farm now owned by Mr James Donnelly. It was situated beside the road on the most easterly point of his land. The remains of the old building may be seen. The only man known to teach there was a Mr Byrne, a native of the district.English Reading seems to have been the only subject taught. Maunsell's Reading made-easy and the Universal were the books in use.The pupils paid the teacher by bringing him eggs, and some other food stuffs.
