O'Neill found out this and he put different men at both sides of the gate.
Then at night the gates were left open and Cromwell's men stole in at their ease.
There was a certain number of soldiers inside the gate, and they closed the gate, and O'Neill's men attacked and killed them all.
Cromwell could not take town as long as O'Neill had ammunition, but when it ran out O'Neill sent the Mayor of Clonmel to Cromwell to make peace, while he himself and his men retired to Limerick.
