    Lord Thomas he was a bold peasant

    And by the middle so small,
    And placed her beside his bonny brown bride,
    Amidst the nobles all.
    Is this your bride, Lord Thomas she said,
    I think she looks wonderfully brown,
    And you should have one of the finest women,
    That ever the sun shone on.

    The bonny brown girl she heard those words,
    She spoke in a wonderful voice,
    Where do you get the water fair Elen,
    That washes your face so white,
    There is a well in my father's yard,
    There is a well said she,
    But if you live till the day of doom,
    That well you never shall see.
    The bonny brown girl she had a penknife,
    The blade was keen and sharp,
    She stuck it into fair Elen's side,
    And pierced her tender heart,
    What aileth thee, Lord Thomas he said,
    I think you look wonderful gone,
    And you were one of the finest women,
    That ever the sun shone on.
