- There was a hedge school in Drumcree one time. The name of the teacher was Master Abbot and he was a stranger. School was not carried on in farmers houses. He stayed a good many years in the district. The master was paid three pence a week by the children. The teacher lodged in a farmer's house. There was no writing done by a pen or pencil but with a slate and pencil. There were First, Second, Third and Fourth and Fifth classes. The teacher had a blackboard and chalk. The subjects that were taught were Reading, Writing, Spelling and Geography.Michael Fitzsimons, Killadoran, Caddagh, Mullingar.
