  1. In the old schools of Ballyoven English. reading and writing simple Arithmetic, Cathecisim and prayers were taught. The writing was done with a quill pen. The school floor was made of flags. The master was self-educated. There were no seats in the school, and the children sat on blockes. The pupils were in Standard III before they were taught to write.

    This school in Ballyoven was built after the famine years. It was a good distance in off the road. Charles Finan was the name of the man who taught there.
