Told by my father Michael Kearney, Fermoyle, Lanesborough, Co. Longford. - The wren is said to be the king of all birds. He got to be king in the following way: The eagle wanted to be the king of the birds because of his strength, size and height and beauty. They made up a plan. They were all to gather together and fly up in the air. Whoever would fly up the highest would be the king. The eagle thought he would go up the highest because he was the strongest. When they were starting the wren got inside the eagle's tail. None of them was as strong as the eagle and he went up as far as he was able. He was above the others and he gave a cheer and said "I am the king of the birds". Then the little wren came out of his hiding place and flew above the eagle and said: "You are not the(continues on next page)
