- Local Marriages 25.10.37This story was told to me by Miss Fahey age 82 years, about how people used to match make long ago. A man named Peter Murtagh was brought to a girl's house and the bargain was settled. And a certain amount of money was to be paid to the intended Bridegroom by the girl's father. Then the day was appointed for the wedding, and all the friends were invited and a great days sport was enjoyed by all. Every man had his horse well fed and fit for a race. Then the guests would all start off together, and the first man and horse back, got a bottle of whiskey as a prize so that is how they spent the day. Then that night there was a great selection of music supplied by a piper and a fiddler, and all the old Irish dances were danced. Then there was a lot of old Irish songs sang, next came the strawboys all dressed up with straw around them from head to foot, it is a custom still in this part of the country.
