The good old cause we must confess
Thus far proceeded with success
And brilliant was Gilheaneys luck
Till he arrived at Ballinamuck
And by reverse of fortune there
He had to fly in wild despair.
Over hill and vale and mead and more
His life not for one moment sure
That night beneath a hedge he lay
Until it was approaching day.
Then stepping forward at the dawn
He met a man called Shuffling Shawn.
To whom he did communicate
His sore distress a hapless fate.
And that he did not his break his fast.
For eight and forty hours past
Shawn brought him to his cosy cot.
And for him good refreshment got
Which pleased the refugee so well
He did his whole adventure tell
He studied to himself a while
And then he uttered with a smile
