- Long ago when doctors were not very plentiful the people had their own cures for almost every ailment.
The mumps was a very common ailment especially amongst children.
Like scarlatina and measles a person only suffered from mumps once, but when it visited a district scarcely one who never had them before escaped.
It was very easy to know when a person was suffering from mumps.
They became swollen on both sides of the neck under the ears, and sometimes they were so bad that they felt as if they were being choked.
Some people tried rubs and poulticing but no remedy seemed of any use until the cure was made.
The cure consisted in putting a donkey's winkers on the head of the sufferer and leading him three times around a pig-sty, saying(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
