- (continued from previous page)was made at the local mills. Grindstones are used in the mills yet Potatoe cake was used, boxty bread made from raw potatoe grated. Often they baked on Saturdays for the whole week A cross was always put on top of a cake this was done for good luck. They baked on griddles and in pot ovens. There is an iron article for baking oat bread before the fire here in our house. Griddle bread was always made at christmas they made other special cakes also.
