- Colclough's school on the Garrycullen - St. Kearns CrossA very funny story is told here about Matty Larkin, the last 'master' in the school : When the Lord of the Soil would be seen coming on his usual visit to the school, the master would shout out above the din of a usually refractory crowd, pounding the desk with a huge stick "Rehearse, ye divils, rehearse!"

once what was up and at once set to read aloud from their "Reading made easy" (the name of the textbook used in these times) with the object of impressing Mr. Colclough with their diligence.
