    sand-pits, mills etc. Bishop Harlewin, the Cistercian Bishop of Leighlin, added considerably to the building. He died in 1216, and was interred near the high altar on the Gospel side. It is generally believed that Hervey was to a great extent responsible for the massacre of the 70 prisoners who were taken when the men of the Decies country, and County Wexford opposed Strongbow and his knights and archers at Bag-an-Bun, when the first act of British brutality was perpetrated on Irish soil - 70 prisoners of war are said to have been beheaded and cast into the sea.
    Filled with remorse, and in order to make atonement for the foul act, he gave the lands to Buildwas to found the magnificent monastery of Dunbrody.

    Not content with founding and endowing the Abbey Hervey eventually entered the Monastery of Buildwas as a monk, having first obtained the consent of his wife the Lady Nesta, daughter of Maurice Fitzgerald. After spending some time in Buildwas Hervey came to Dunbrody and died there as Abbot in 1205 aged 75 years.
