Fairs were also held in the smaller villages of Tintern Scar Nash and Foulksmills. Tolls were paid at Tintern and Scar fair greens.
LUCK MONEY
is not normally paid by the Seller now but on occasion the Sum of two Shillings or 2/6 or maybe 5/- in the case of a larger amount is given.MARKING of ANIMALS Bought.
Pigs are marked on the backs by cutting with a scissors. Sheep are raddled that is given a stroke of red paint on the back. Cattle are marked with a scissors on the back.When an animal is sold the halter or rope is generally given away.On account of the system of local buyers and agents operating systematically from home throughout the year the large quarterly or annual fair is unknown in South Wexford.
Old Customs at fairs.Forty or fifty years ago when fairs were held in the Surrounding villages, the young people gathered for the occasion and dancer were held. All classes of musicians attended.Refreshment tents did a big trade in pigs' feet and pigs' sandwiches."Pegg's Leg" a coarse kind of sugar Stick was the favourite Sweet meat as Chocolate and the better class of Sweets were then unknown(continues on next page)- Collector
